i'm glad i did both the sunrise and sunset bromo trips, not least because the differing weather conditions made for two very distinct experiences. they both went to slightly different places, although unsurprisingly they both also made the same stop at mount bromo, the smoking volcano after which the national park is named. the sunset trip was an overcast afternoon with thick plumes of smoke pumping out of the crater. it's a bit of a trek from where the jeeps stop to the mouth of the volcano, which includes 250 steps at the end, but fortunately there were very few other people around which made it feel more special. we drove to the same place after we returned to the jeep from watching the sunrise with clear blue skies. these conditions meant the you could look further inside of the volcano, however the smoke was a lot thinner as it wisped out. also the number of people at the top was crazy, every one of the 250 steps had people ascending and descending at all times. all of that is to say that even the one place that i visited on both trips felt like two different experiences.

the guy in this shot clearly wanted to escape the crowds, so he ignored the no entry sign and began walking along the edge of the volcano. by way of contrast, certainly in terms of weather conditions, here's a misty shot looking the other way from the top of the volcano. there are a bunch more shots on my instagram post
