watch the colours creep - extra image

watch the colours creep
for the next two weeks i watch the colours creep, into the graveyard that i keep beneath the steps, from my burnt up cigarettes
last month i went on another little trip out of the city, this time to the north of england, northumberland to be exact. when i left home the country was in the midst of a heatwave, but typically by the time i arrived it had started raining. it was quite cloudy for most of the week, which was particularly annoying as northumberland is supposed to have some of the darkest skies in the country to see the stars. fortunately on my final night the clouds parted and the stars came out. the day before i had driven past this location as the sun was setting and the bay was full of water creating cool reflections, so i thought it could be a good spot to return to at night. however the tides had taken a lot of the water away, so it didn't look quite how i had imagined and i just took a few photos before looking for somewhere else. as i was taking the photos i thought the colours looked a little strange on the back of my camera, but i didn't give it too much thought. it was only after i returned home and inspected the image on my computer that i realised i had unintentionally photographed the northern lights for the first time. i didn't even realise that you could see them from that part of the country, i always associate them with places like iceland and norway. i still hope to go to those countries where i imagine it's even more spectacular, but i feel pretty lucky that the stars aligned for me to be able to capture them from home.
