what's poppin'?
i've mentioned before that while i thought the kings were prettiest penguins i saw on my trip, these adélie penguins were the most charasmatic. turns out that's quite a commonly held sentiment. one of the survivors of scott's ill-fated journey to the south pole described them rather delightfully in his memoir the worst journey in the world:
they are extraordinarily like children, these little people of the antarctic world, either like children, or like old men, full of their own importance and late for dinner, in their black tail-coats and white shirt-fronts—and rather portly withal.
