today is a pretty significant day on this island as scotland decides if it wants to be independent from the uk. as an english person living in england i don't get a vote, and i concede that my opinion is probably of similar value. from what i have garnered from the coverage it seems as though it would be in my best interest if scotland decided to stay in the union. however i'm not a fan of imperialism so i think the shrinking of the british empire is a good thing - and i like that we're at a stage in human civilisation where this can be achieved through an election instead of a violent war. plus the curious side of me would like to see what kind of country an independent scotland would become. i think that voting yes is an inherently optimistic choice - and not just because the word is yes - but because you're banking on having a different (and hopefully better) future. sure it may be the safe option to stay as you are, but if you're not totally happy and think there might be more then i say quit your job and go travelling around south america. wait, what were we talking about? oh yeah scottish independence. well i guess as a brit and an englishman i'd like scotland to stay, but if i was scottish i'd probably be voting for freedom, so i'm cool with either.
