as soon as i arrived in taiwan i was struck by how ubiquitous it was to see people wearing face masks, it felt like i'd travelled back to pandemic times. there was a certain irony that within a few days i started to feel unwell with headaches and a cough. i managed to find a covid test which came back negative, but annoyingly my ill health persisted for quite a few weeks, which is why i spent so long in taipei. this was at the same time that euro 2024 began in germany, so when i wasn't working i'd fill up this downtime by watching football. the time difference didn't make it easy, but i came upon a routine which worked pretty well. i'd stay up to watch the first game of the day before going to sleep, and then log straight back into iplayer when i awoke to catch up on the remaining game or two. often i would watch these morning games at 1.5x speed which i'm now convinced is the ideal speed to watch all football games - it feels so slow and lumbering when you switch back to regular speed. although in fairness with most of the england games we looked slow and lumbering at any speed.
