stay in the shadows
i went to sri ranganathaswamy on my last day in trichy, having already booked accommodation for my next destination in madurai. i stayed until late afternoon and as the sun got lower in the sky it seeped through various gaps in the temple structure creating these temporary pockets of light in which i tried to capture the visitors as they walked through. it was dark by the time i returned to the city so i found some biryani for dinner and then made it back to the hotel. the day before when i visited the rock fort temple i'd bought a large bottle of lime and ginger juice from a street vendor, so i finished that off while watching a late night football game and went to sleep in the early hours. at least i tried to sleep, but not long after closing my eyes i felt the sudden urge to go to the toilet... an urge which repeated every 10 minutes for most of the night. i hadn't experienced this since i took a bus to from mumbai to goa last november, but i think the day old lime and ginger juice was the culprit. i eventually managed a few hours of sleep but when my alarm went off in time to pack and check out i now had a fever to accompany my frequent toilet visits. i had no choice but to phone the hotel in madurai, postpone the trip and spend the rest of the day shivering and sweating in bed. i knew that delhi belly was pretty much guaranteed when visiting india, but i assumed it would be a one and done occurrence which would make me stronger as a result, so i felt kinda betrayed that my body would succumb again. the following day was a marginal improvement, the fever at least was a lot milder, so i persevered and got the next bus journey out of the way. it was only a couple of hours to madurai, but they were two extremely tense hours praying that i could keep everything together. mercifully i made it to the bus station without incident, jumped straight into a tuk tuk to the hotel and felt a combination of relief and exhaustion as i finally collapsed into bed again.
