when i was looking around for my next destination after chennai i came across an amazing photo of a temple built atop a rock which sat in the centre of a colourful city. it was in a place called tiruchirappalli (which people helpfully shorten to trichy) and is around six hours south west of chennai, so i booked some accommodation and boarded a local bus to check it out. i knew that it would be unlikely i'd be able to recreate the photograph which drew me there as it looked like it was taken by either a drone or from a helicopter. but it was still cool to climb up all the steps to the top of the rock fort and see the temple and city views. however my highlight from the city was visiting a different temple called sri ranganathaswamy which was just under an hours walk from where i was staying. it's the largest functioning hindu temple in the world, and i really felt the vastness of the place as i passed through endless gopurams to get to the centre. a happy byproduct of the scale was that even though there were a lot of people there, it never really felt too busy or crowded with everyone spread out. it made for the perfect place to both temple watch and people watch.
