mostly waving
we had whale sightings pretty much everyday we were out at sea, although a sighting included seeing puffs of air coming out of a distant blowhole, so it wasn't always as impressive as it might sound. the hope was that these puffs would get ever closer and we'd be able to see the whale itself as it rose to the surface. you had to be out on deck in order to see this, and there was usually a small group of passengers who were on the lookout. i joined them one afternoon, pointing and clicking whenever there was a shout of activity in the water. there were a few false alarms, but because it's difficult to see that far with the naked eye i learned it was always better to click just in case. i must have overdone it though, because by the time a group of humpbacks got close and started breaching, my battery started failing and my memory card was full up. i tried to free up space on my card whilst keeping an eye on the ocean whenever someone would locate the whales, but ultimately failed to capture any whale breaches. it was really frustrating that i'd waited all that time out in the cold, but i did manage to get this whale shot earlier in the trip, and the experience has only strengthened my desire to see more whales in the future.
here's another shot, this time of the whale's body
