this is the messeplatz in basel, switzerland which i think is the coolest building i've ever seen. it was pretty new when i visited in 2013, yet still now it looks like some awesome, futuristic spaceship. it was designed by famous architects herzog and de meuron who are from basel and have a few other stunning buildings in the city. when i posted a shot of another of their creations i noted how they were working on an extension to the tate modern in london, which was completed in 2016. it was originally going to have a similarly futuristic feel with stacked blocks of glass at weird angles, however they ended up amending it to look more conventional with a brick facade to fit in with the rest of the gallery. as much as i would love to have seen their original design, it was probably the right call to make it feel more like a natural extension of the rest of the building. hopefully there will be other sites in my city where they can realise their more abstract creations.
