your eyes open windows
i stayed in kota kinabalu on three separate occasions during my travels in borneo, each time in the same hostel in chinatown. my second stint there was over a weekend, and for a few hours on the sunday the street outside transformed into a bustling market. it was a fun place to explore, i tried some really nice dragonfruit and a less appetising milkshake made from durian fruit. it was also convenient as i needed to make up for missing my niece's first birthday by getting her a cool present. i wanted to get something particularly bornean, thinking a soft toy orangutan would be the perfect choice. i found one i thought looked good, but on closer inspection it was actually infested with bugs, which i figured was probably a bit too bornean for an infant. to be honest that kinda put me off the whole cuddly toy idea, so instead i settled for a cute, insect free, local dress.
