something in the air

something in the air
we've raced for the last time, a place of no return, and there's something in the air
in addition to the rice fields and temples in hampi and the surrounding area, the other most striking element of the landscapes were the piles of big red boulders. they're perfect for climbing up, and as such attract a number of keen boulderers who do just that. i made it up to a popular climbing spot late one afternoon, which i was told was also a great place to watch the sunset. unfortunately the clouds obscured the setting sun, but i stayed a bit longer when the light dimmed and the climbers descended to see a few stars begin twinkling through. i didn't bring my tripod with me, so instead i rested my camera on the rock i was sitting on and tried to angle it towards these big rocks. it proved to be very difficult with the display on the back of my camera so close to the ground as i couldn't easily find an angle to preview the composition. this also made the process of manually focussing a big challenge, so i spent a long time taking test shots and making micro adjustments. by the time i was finally satisfied i set a timelapse going and almost immediately the clouds returned, so annoyingly most of shots ended up with a flat white sky. however the final photo i took before picking up and turning off my camera somehow managed to produce these light trails. for the life of me i can't say what the light source was that created them, i'd guess the movement was the way that i moved the camera when i picked it up, but the origin of the lights were and remain a beautiful mystery.

despite the cloudy timelapse being pretty much a failure, i still made use of them along with these mystery lines in creating a little video
