a week after coming back from a working in marrakech i took the first tube of the day to get to the office and then on a 6 hour bus to west wales. the whole company spent 3 days there as part of a retreat/bonding/seminar type thing. so there were silly games, activities as well as little brainstorming sessions. one of the games was a thing called 'secret friends' where we all picked a random name out of a hat and had to do random acts of kindness for them. the person who picked my name out was actually one of my best friends in the office, which was nice but also made it extra unfortunate that i kinda broke her nose on the final day. we all went white water rafting and as soon as we got moving in the water we started trying to hook each other in the water with our paddles. it was funny as the previous two days emphasised the importance of teamwork and collaboration, whereas the third day was just about pulling people into a freezing welsh river. although technically there were three rafts so we were working in teams... against the other rafts of colleagues. embarrassingly my (secret) friend was on my team, but sat behind me so when a battle broke out between us and another raft i accidentally smacked her in the face when i tried to catch an opponent. i'm hoping it's not a metaphor for what it's like to work with me in a team situation.
