i took this photo shortly after eating in a place called crif dogs, a hot dog joint in the east village in new york city. it was recommended by a few people, partly for the food but mainly because it held a secret. inside the small restaurant is a telephone booth, the story goes that if you enter the booth and dial a certain number a secret door is opened and you're invited into a hidden speakeasy. now tell me that doesn't sound cool and intriguing? after polishing of my hot dog i entered the booth and spent a few confused minutes inside before the guy behind the counter told me that it wasn't gonna open for a few hours. i returned later in the evening to find a queue stretching out of the telephone booth, and when i finally got to the front they estimated it would be about a 4 hour wait. there isn't much cool and intriguing about waiting for hours to drink in a tiny room. the obvious lesson here is that if more than a few people tell you about a secret place, well you can be sure that it ain't secret no more.
