when you live in london and visit new york it's hard not to compare the two cities. on my first visit six years ago i recall thinking how the big apple was far superior, however this time around i wasn't so sure. the subway was a big part of that, for starters in new york they still have old fashioned paper tickets which you have to feed into the turnstile to enter. and the turnstiles are two-way, which means if travellers want to enter and exit you have to wait either side for the queue to subside. also if you go in the wrong entrance you're 'locked out' of re-entering the correct entrance until an allotted period of time has elapsed. plus when you get to the platforms (by walking due to an absence of escalators) there are no electronic signs indicating when the next train will arrive. i recognise that these are all minor complaints, but they are also things which you take for granted on the tube in london. at least the annoyance of travelling under the ground in new york encouraged me to spend more time above ground, and when the streets are lined with amazing skyscrapers like this that's no bad thing.
