between the clouds
i took this at the top of death road in bolivia, after our minibus had made it up to the top. i remember at the beginning of the day there was a girl who said she wasn't too nervous about cycling down, but really scared about the drive back up. i couldn't understand the logic, assuming that four wheels equalled safe and two wheels equalled danger. she explained that on the way down she was in complete control of her journey, whereas the way back up it was all in the hands of the driver. plus there was a lot more space on the road when you're cycling on a narrow road compared to driving. these thoughts crossed my mind as we navigated the dangerous road uphill, skirting precipitously close to the cliff edge. as on the way down, i felt that the stunning view made up for all of the risk.
