this is a bit of inca graffiti which i spied on taquile, an island in lake titicaca. we were told that each side had three steps, which represented the three levels of existence, the overworld, this current world and the underworld. essentially this is similar to the christian notion of heaven, earth and hell. i also remember each of these levels are represented in a lot of mythology and art by a sacred peruvian animal: the condor for the overworld, the puma for the middleworld and the snake for the underworld. unfortunately i didn't see any of these three creatures on lake titicaca.
