the majority of the travellers who i met during my long trip in south america were european, and plenty of those who weren't had travelled in europe. it was never a place which held much interest in me before - i've pretty much only ever been to france, germany and italy - but with the more people i met the more my point of view began to change. when i finally returned to the uk i decided that i wouldn't take any major trips in the short/medium term future, but instead take shorter holidays to new, european destinations. i spent a few days in holland at the end of last year and last weekend i visited switzerland for the first time. actually a quick search on this site reveals that statement to be factually inaccurate, but in my mind waiting for a connecting flight does not a visit make. anyway i'm hoping to fit in a few more new countries and new cities before the year is out - i'm not sure if i can compete with the 10 countries i set foot in during 2012 - but i like a challenge.
