monkey fight

this photo is the only one in my archives that i thought could act as an obscure reference to lost - as jacob and the man in black duking it out. the reason i want to reference it is because i just finished watching the end a.k.a. the last ever episode. i must say that as a series, lost is stubbornly consistent. since it started six years ago it's been brilliant and frustrating in unequal measure. it would raise loads of questions, drag out small details and flick from situation to situation when you wanted it to stay still and explain itself. at the same time it's intelligently written (the writers don't treat the audience like children), created rich characters that you bond with, and left you thinking about it after an episode would finish. perhaps it's best quality was it's watchability - as frustrating as an episode would be, you'd never think fuck it, i'm out, i just don't care anymore. you'd allow yourself to become frustrated because you invested a lot in it (not just time) so you'd really want to see the next episode.

with no evidence to the contrary, i suppose it's unsurprising that the series finale followed this same pattern. it answered some questions and left some hanging, it was big on broad brush strokes which masked some finer details. then again anyone who has seen the previous 100+ episodes must have known that they weren't going to get everyone in a circle and dissect what's going on. and i can't think that anyone would have found it satisfying if that had of happened. i respect the balls of the creators who would answer a critical question of why people can't leave the island with one simple line of dialogue. i'm sure there will be plenty of malcontents out there, but i think if you took the whole series, and distilled it into a 2 hour movie, you wouldn't have any regrets as the credits rolled. it wasn't the best television show of the decade, it isn't 10 out of 10 perfect, but it was an consistent, intelligent and entertaining drama. and i'm glad i stuck with it.
